Ardiana Xhafa - Fallingwater

Falling water is perhaps the most famous private residence in the world. It is the masterpiece of Frank Lloyd Wrights, who has been described as the greatest architect of the twentieth century. The house’s innovative design and construction has been written about extensively and it has won world-wide acclaim, but nothing compares to experiencing Falling water in person.

The residence was commissioned as a weekend home by Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann in 1936. The site is an extraordinarily beautiful and remote setting in Mill Run, in western Pennsylvania. The forest setting contains boulders, rock ledges, and a stream with a waterfall. The Kaufmanns enjoyed the land for years prior to building there, and when they commissioned the house, they naturally believed that Wright would situate the house so that it faced the falls. Instead, Wright’s plan placed the house directly on top of the Wright’s design fuses the house with nature. The materials blend with colors of rocks and trees, and long lines of windows open the house to the outdoors.

The horizontal lines of the structure’s reinforced concrete layers cantilever dramatically over the stream, and seem to hover in space. The sandstone walls between the layers were quarried on the property. What was formerly the Kaufmann’s favorite boulder for picnicking now resides inside the house in front of the fireplace in the living room. The result is a house that both reflects and enhances its surroundings, and connects the people who visit with the environment.
In 1963, Falling water was given to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, who have maintained it ever since. It was opened to the public the following year. Each year, well over one hundred thousand visitors are drawn to the remote site, located two hours southeast of Pittsburgh. Reservations are required to guarantee admission.
